Abraham DeHate / Fish
Decoy
Carved
and painted wooden decoy with attached metal fins and carpet tack eyes.
Circa 1920. Length 13" |
DeHate was the creator of hundreds of extraordinary
duck and fish decoys and his work bridged the earlier, less decorative
pieces of the 19th Century with the elaborately finished
mid-Twentieth
century decoys.
As his many fine Ice Spears attest, DeHate was
also highly skilled in metal working, and as a carpenter, boatwright,
sculptor and wood carver, represents the multi-discipline genius
of the
greatest master carvers.
